I think that Mathilde should not have acted so guilty when she lost the necklace. When she rushed out of the building because of her appearance in her haste she could have lost the necklace and it would be an honest mistake. Had she told Mme. Loisel I'm sure she would understand and Mme. Loisel would have told her that the necklace was fake. Furthermore had she been honest I'm almost certain that  she would have then become one on two things; she could become more humble because of the fright or she could have become more fake and unhappy. I do however understand why she did all of these things. In the upper class it is important to look your best and to always be "perfect". It can lead people to do shallow things and to look, act, and dress like "plastic". I am however slightly disgusted with her attitude of never having enough even though she has more than enough to live comfortably. Having said that she eventually got her due when she  lost everything and was in the lower class.
